Transcendence

Oh boy, another post by David! 🙂 (For those of you who are only here for Jerry’s posts, she’ll be back tomorrow, I promise…)

So, today’s post has to do with spirituality, the paranormal, and other things that we lack the ability to experience with our physical senses.

I am very much of two minds when it comes to such things. On the one hand, I am fairly certain that the vast majority of “supernatural” experiences, if not all, can be explained in completely natural terms. The human brain is an incredibly complicated piece of kit, and we are only beginning to comprehend all the things it can do, and how it is affected by its environment. And given that all of our perceptions of the world and its workings (natural and otherwise) are dependent upon the processes that take place entirely in this poorly understood lump of tissue we all carry around on our shoulders, it is absolutely conceivable to me that the things that go “bump in the night” are, in the end, simply glitches in our internal software.

On the other hand, there is nothing that I would love more than concrete evidence that such experiences are real. The thought that the universe is “not only stranger than we imagine, but stranger than we can imagine” gives me great hope. The desire to push back the veil of reality and discover that it is just the barest of veneers covering what’s really going on holds an amazing appeal for me.

My friend Tayo asked me a very difficult question one day. He said, “David, what do you want?” (Actually I believe that is probably one of the most difficult questions you can ask anyone.) I thought about it for several weeks (truly!), and finally came back that what I wanted was for people to like me. Or, more to the point, I wanted people to not dislike me. (I never had a problem with people remaining neutral about me… 🙂 )

But I was never really satisfied with that answer. And so, I have continued to cogitate on the question, some decades after it was originally asked. And though my answers continue to change as both I and my circumstances do, one aspect of my internal response has become fairly fixed: I want to experience transcendence.

If you look up “transcendence” in the dictionary (or, more likely in this day of Wikipedia and blogs, on dictionary.com…) you will find the definition is “the quality or state of being above and independent of the material universe”. Sounds positively supernatural! 🙂

And I suppose that is why I have such a fascination with such potentially idiotic things as UFOs, Bigfoot, and life after death. Because if any of those things actually exist, then they do “transcend” what we understand as making up our material world. And experiencing them, or even learning about their factual existence, would definitely be a transcendent moment.

However, there is an exquisite zen-like twist to this line of thinking. If any of those things were proved to actually exist, then they would instantly become part of our material universe, and so lose their transcendent quality! Reality is an elastic concept, and once something is “proven”, reality adjusts itself quite comfortably to include the newborn “fact”.

So maybe that is why I continue to enjoy the edges of the supernatural, without wanting to seek out the heart of any mysteries. Once the mystery is solved, it’s no fun anymore. 🙂

Junk Food and Irma

I don’t know why but you must purchase a ton of junk food for hurricane prep.  You are not allowed (ha) to purchase anything healthy, because you will be without electricity and must eat Cheetos, or Chex mix.

Most of my friends who live in the Panhandle of Florida were anticipating a worse outcome with Hurricane Irma.  I know that I seem to be making light of a subject that has most people in South Florida without their homes, or still without power, but I am not.  I am certain that if a Cat 4 was headed our way, we would have done things a bit differently.

But…we didn’t.  We went to the store, and have plenty of food for days (and water).  But I didn’t have Cheetos.  Or snack size chocolate.  Or wine.  Hello!  Some of the stores closed in anticipation of a much worse storm in the afternoon yesterday (Sunday).  I had David run to pick up more of the essentials…Cheetos, and chocolate before they closed.

We are fine, and have family and friends in South Florida that we will be helping if needed.  But for some reason most of my friends have been eating junk food for days in preparation for Irma.  We had to restock.

Praying for those in the path of Irma.  Praying for those in the West with the fires.  Praying for Jose to go away.  I really don’t need to eat anymore Cheetos.

Blessings.

Roasted Brussels Sprouts

I love these.  Roasting the Brussels Sprouts brings a nutty flavor, and gives it a different texture (not gummy but crisp) especially when you add bacon. I trimmed up the ends, and cut them in half.  Added about one tablespoon of olive oil, and salt and pepper.  Baked at 400 degrees for about 20-25 minutes.  Chopped bacon slices (about 4), and sprinkled those on the sprouts as well. Turned or tossed once to keep from over cooking on one side.I served these with the London Broil.  Roasting really adds a sweetness to the sprouts, and bacon is always a good addition to vegetables.

Blessings!

London Broil

We got a London Broil for buy one/get one at Winn Dixie the other day.  We decided to have it on Friday evening.
I was off due to Hurricane Irma, and thought it would be a good idea to marinate the London Broil.  So I found this recipe at the Food Network, and modified to the ingredients I had on hand.
  • 4 large garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup dry red wine
  • 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • top-round London broil
Chop the garlic add salt.  Blend together with all other ingredients and place in a large Ziploc.
Marinate steak, chilled, turning occasionally, at least 4 hours and up to 24.
Bring steak to room temperature before grilling.  Remove steak from marinade, letting excess drip off, and grill on an oiled rack set 5 to 6 inches over glowing coals, 7 to 9 minutes on each side for medium-rare.   Let rest on a cutting board or in a dish for at least 10 minutes.
When cutting, hold a knife at a 45-degree angle, cut steak across grain into thin slices.
 David’s plate.
While I can’t eat as much as I would like of the steak, having a couple of thin slices is perfect for me and my sleeve.  I don’t eat red meat often, so this is a true treat.
So far we are still out of harms way with the Hurricane.  Praying for those in its path.
Blessings.

Preparation

I live in Northwest Florida.  The panhandle of Florida. On the Emerald Coast.  A lot of people call it South Alabama.  We are 7 hours away from Orlando, and 10 hours away from Miami (depending on traffic).

Hurricane Irma is scheduled to hit Miami tomorrow (Saturday), and Florida Governor Scott cancelled all schools k-12, colleges and universities.  All activities cancelled through Monday so that the northern schools could provide shelters for the southern evacuees.  Also, I think, in preparation for the hurricane coming North.  People need to prepare.  Prepare.

There is an urgency in preparing for a Hurricane.  Getting your papers in order (birth certificates, marriage licenses, etc.) into Ziploc’s and storage tubs that may or may not be waterproof.  Photographs that are irreplaceable stored (somewhere – there is a great debate out there on this).  Clothes, medicines, food and water – everything that you may need for 3 days.  Even where I live, people are getting their personal items in order.  Some are getting gas, and sand bags.

I wonder how many are making sure their hearts are in order.  That they understand where their lives may end up (in the worst situation).  That is why we are preparing, right?  That there is a chance that everything will be gone, including our life?  Are you prepared?  I know that deep down I am prepared.  I am ready for whatever storm God brings me to, but that doesn’t make me stand still and do nothing.

I am a worst-case scenario person.  I tend to think the worst, and anything above that is gravy.  Even with the storm looming four or five days away, I think, what if?  Is my family prepared for something I can’t control?  Are their hearts ready?

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; think about Him in all your ways, and He will guide you on the right paths…”

-Proverbs 3:5-6 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Our direction is to go out and tell others.  To walk in our faith and let our light shine for all to see.  To guide those who need unfailing love.  It isn’t to be happy, or perfect, but to do His work –loving all.

“There comes a time to own your unhappiness and stop the blaming.  We get so fixated on whether or not we’re happy that we miss our life work.  You DO have a life work.  It was foreordained and timed by God.  It is the reason why you are here on this earth with your gifts and experience.” – Beth Moore

I often struggle with when it is the right time to share.  I want all to see that God’s love is everlasting, and that my faith is strong.  I struggle with my daily walk, and with giving everything to God.  I know that I struggle, but I come back to being prepared.  He knows my walk.  He guides my path.  He knows my storms.  I know that people will see what they want to see, but I pray they see my strength in Him regardless of my storm.

Preparing for a storm on Sunday, praying for all today.

Blessings.

Games

David here again! Looks like these posts may become a weekly thing. 🙂

In keeping with the title, today’s post is related to games. And in keeping with the topic of games, today’s post is being constructed with a particular rule in mind. Based upon an article about creative writing exercises, this rule is serving to make this post difficult to complete. However, the attempt must be made, if for no other reason than discipline.

With a collection of boardgames numbering well into the hundreds, it is fair to say that games are a personal favorite. Games have the capacity, it seems, to at least approach a level of “transcendence”. By moving one “above and beyond” the material universe (given that, in the essence, all games take place in the imagination), it could be fairly said that games can allow one to “transcend”. How many times have you played a game with family or friends, only to be shocked to discover how many hours have flown by once you were done?

Perhaps that sense of moving beyond the mundane is what makes games so appealing. The sense of experiencing things, even via imagination (does the brain know the difference?), that one would never experience in “real life”. The exploration of the unknown, and the thrill of discovery as another level is achieved, another card is turned, another battle is won, another point is scored.

Although, ironically, it is possible that another appeal of games is just the opposite: a sense of “knowing what the rules are”. In a very literal sense, when playing a game, one is in control. You know what the rules are. You have a limited amount of information to process, and even unanticipated events that occur do so within the context of the game itself. (You’re not surprised when your opponent cashes his cards in for reinforcements in a game of “Risk”, for example, but you would be shocked to see him place a dinosaur on the board and proceed to play Godzilla all over your pieces…) Particularly if you have played a game before, you know what to expect.

The universe, however, imparts no such assurances to its players. 🙂 Every day is a new roll of the dice, every moment brings with it the potential for a new, entirely unfamiliar rule. That may or may not ever be applied again. The universe offers an innumerable amount of opportunities and challenges to its players, but a sense of being in control is not one of them.

Anyway, games are cool. 🙂 So, have you figured out the rule constraining the above paragraphs yet? Here’s a hint – I just broke it. 🙂

National Read A Book Day

Today is National Read A Book Day.  Go grab a book, any book and read today!

Carmen always goes back to the Harry Potter series when she wants to read something.  I like to pick new books to read for leisure.  That is on hold right now due to my college classes and homework.
