National Bundt Day

In honor of National Bundt Day…a re-post of my Nutella Marbled Bundt Cake from September, 2010.

Nutella Marbled Bundt Cake

I had this yellow cake mix, and wanted to make some sort of marbled cake with it.  I love my Mom’s bundt pan. So…

I used about 1 cup of Nutella, mixed together with an egg.
Used 3 eggs, 1 stick butter, and 1/3 cup water per the cake mix instructions.

I used 1 egg and about 1 cup of Nutella, mixed.
I also added about 1 teaspoon of cinnamon to the Nutella mix.
I added 1 teaspoon of almond extract and about 2/3 cups of mayonnaise, yes mayonnaise!
My Mom used to use it–swore that it made the cake moist.  And, I believed her.  I mixed together the cake mix and mayo.  Took about 1/3 of the mix and mixed it with the Nutella and egg mixture.
Sprayed the pan, and coated it with flour.  (I always use too much flour.)
Pour the yellow mix in.  Drop the pan onto the counter several times to
make sure that it is even (and to release any air bubbles).  Spoon over the Nutella mix.
Take a knife and slice into the yellow mix (this should make your swirl).
Add the remaining batter. Drop pan again making sure all bubbles come to the top.
Follow the directions for a bundt pan on the cake mix (38-43 minutes) at 375 degrees
in the middle part of your oven.  Remove when done (use a cake tester).
Cool on a cooling rack for about 10 minutes.
Invert onto a plate.  Once cake is completely cooled, sprinkle some powdered sugar on top.
Not really swirled – all of the chocolate mix went to the bottom (or top) it was too heavy.
I will have to lighten this part up next time (although my family says NO).
It is really moist!  I sound surprised! ha.  It really is though.
You don’t have wait 3 days for this one to be really moist.
My family raved about it so much, David had seconds.  So much for this being for the entire week.  =)

“If you don’t scale the mountain, you can’t see the view.” – unknown

This is my 500th post.  As of this writing I have 90 followers (in January I had 7) -so wow!!  And I am over 300 followers on Twitter.  This is crazy.

I made a commitment to blog everyday this year, and so far, have been able to post something daily.  My anxiety gets me most of the time, but again, just plugging through daily.  Step by step…scaling my mountains.

Happy.  Thank you.

Blessings – today and always.

Howdy, David here again! In order to help Jerry keep up with her schedule, I have agreed to post a blog entry once a week (or so).

When I was thinking about what I wanted to write today, my first thought was “I want to make sure whatever I post brings value to Jerry’s readers.” And that thought gave me my first topic!

Value. We hear that word regularly, but do we really consider what it actually means? Several years ago, I attended a course on marketing. As part of that course, the instructor provided an equation that became a touchstone for me. It was a mathematical equation for value. Here is what he wrote:

Value = Benefit – Cost

The premise is that value is simply the difference between how much we think any particular decision will benefit us, compared to the cost we perceive with that decision. In order to make any choice, we have to see that value as positive – the benefit has to outweigh the cost.

Now, one of the mistakes a lot of people make when they encounter this concept for the first time is that they automatically assign a “dollar sign” to the variables, especially the cost portion. But cost, and benefit, are not only not solely tied to money, but they are also completely subjective. Each individual will evaluate the cost and benefit of any decision completely through their own personal lens.

So, at this point, allow me to offer an example – this post. Some of the costs associated with this post include the time and effort it takes to read it. There are also “opportunity costs” to consider – those things that you aren’t doing right now, because you are currently reading this.

Against these costs, consider the benefits. Maybe you have an interest in economics. Maybe you just have a curiosity about why people do the things they do. Maybe you were just bored and looking to kill a few minutes. 🙂

Regardless, my hope is that the cost of this post, to you, was more than offset by the benefit you received from it. I hope this post did, indeed, provide you value.

College, Again

Well, week one has begun, and I am not freaking out.  I am calm.  Calmer than I should be when I think about all of the homework I need to have done by Monday.  I am feeling overwhelmed with the amount of work that needs to be done, work full time, and blog.

My goal of blogging everyday has become a little more difficult, and I am hopeful to continue with help from David.  Hopefully, I won’t be too scattered, and just asking for happy thoughts, and prayers.

Thank you!!

Blogging Goals

Blogging.  Today I have blogged every day for two months.  Two months!  Fifty-eight days. One of my goals for the year was to blog more.

I got through January, and thought I would scale back to maybe 3 to 5 days a week.  I realized I really have enjoyed coming here daily.

Not sure if I will maintain daily in March, but I am going to try.

What goals have you accomplished so far this year?
